The core section of the trail is about 25 kilometers long, taking 3–4 days to complete with moderately high difficulty. The altitude rises from 2,100 meters to the Jiajin Mountain Pass at 4,114 meters. Following the footprints of the Red Army’s Long March, the trail preserves red relics such as the Red Army plank roads, slogans and campsites. Multiple red culture interpretation stations are set up, staffed with professional narrators who detail the arduous journey and revolutionary stories of the Red Army crossing Jiajin Mountain. In terms of natural scenery, the trail crosses various landforms including subtropical broad-leaved forests, alpine coniferous forests and alpine meadows. In summer, the meadows are green and dotted with wildflowers; in autumn, the mountains are covered with colorful foliage; in winter, everything is blanketed in snow. Hikers can experience the unique plateau climate feature of "four seasons in one day, different views every ten miles".

The supporting facilities balance red education and hiking safety. The Jiajin Mountain Red Army Long March Memorial Hall at the starting point displays a large number of revolutionary cultural relics and historical photos, providing hikers with an immersive red education experience. Three red-themed rest stations along the way offer accommodation, catering and medical supplies, decorated with Red Army-themed elements to create a strong revolutionary atmosphere. As an IMTA model route, it has an improved signage system and emergency rescue network, equipped with professional hiking guides and rescuers. The best hiking season is June–September each year, when the climate is relatively mild, the snow mountain scenery is clearly visible, making it suitable for hiking and red-themed research activities. Winter hiking requires professional ice and snow gear and is only suitable for experienced hikers.
