Farid Zaini,General Manager of Rinjani -Lombok UNESCO Global Geopark, Indonesia
Good afternoon everyone. Thank you very much for a great opportunity to let us join this amazing IMTA Annual Conference. My name is M. Farid Zaini, General Manager of Rinjani-Lombok UGGp.
Rinjani-Lombok Geopark is located in a small island in Lesser Sunda, Indonesia. Our geopark covers 2800 km 2 area in 4 Districts and 1 City. Rinjani Geopark encompasses more than a half of Lombok Island with Rinjani Volcanic Complex as a center of the geopark. Every geopark has its own outstanding geological value, so do we. Rinjani Volcano is ours.
Prior to 13th Century, Rinjani Complex consisted of two volcanic cones, namely Samalas (or Old Rinjani) and Rinjani. In 1257, Samalas erupted and the eruption is considered to be the most powerful eruption in human history. The volcanic ashes entered the stratosphere and fell out to the north and south pole, creating ice core archives of sulfate & tephra deposit, summer cooling in North America, there were weather anomaly along 1258 in Europe such as dark eclipse, crop failure, death mass in England, etc. In Lombok itself this eruption buried Pamatan Kingdom, and change the landscape of Lombok immensely.
Until today, people can see the remains of the powerful eruption in the past by visit Mount Rinjani. Mount Rinjani has 6 geosites around this area, such as Rinjani Cone, Caldera of Samalas, Mount Barujari, Segara Anak Lake, Aik Kalaq Spring and Susu Cave.
To climb Rinjani, you should book your trip online through website www.erinjani.id or by an android application named eRinjani. You need a local Trekking Organizer to arrange and responsible to you while trekking to Rinjani. Local guide and porters will accompany you and serve almost everything during the trek.
Currently in Indonesia, we try to create the best formula for developing post-pandemic mountain tourism. We believe mountain tourism in Rinjani will slowly recovered. Some of the things to do are to prepare Standard Operational Procedures in trekking, and adopting COVID-19 protocols by limiting the number of visitors. And we trying to optimize promoting through virtual tour and social media.
At the moment we are holding a photo and video competition with the theme of Mount Rinjani Trekking Activity to promote Rinjani to the world. The most important thing about sustainable tourism is engagement with the people, and we are trying to engage everyone who’ve been visiting Rinjani, and anyone who interested in Rinjani by remind beautiful memories about Rinjani.
Thank you.
