From "check-in tourism" to "immersive travel stays," an increasing number of travelers are slowing down their pace, measuring time in months, seasons, and years in Yunnan—China's premier tourism province. Data reveals that nearly 4 million travelers have settled in the Land of the Clouds in 2024, unlocking alternative lifestyles amidst traditional villages and sea-of-clouds terraced fields.

The shift from "tourism" to "residential travel" may seem like a single-character difference, yet it encompasses every aspect of eating, lodging, transportation, and sightseeing, embodying a complete transformation of the tourism industry.

The Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism announced the launch of a three-year initiative to develop residential tourism in Yunnan. This includes establishing at least 3,000 key residential villages and fostering new industries such as wellness tourism, educational travel, cultural and sports activities, and senior care. The goal is to create a bespoke "lifestyle blind box" for long-distance residents.
