Jilin is a major province for winter tourism in China. Facing new opportunities brought by the winter sports boom, many locals have transitioned into new professions and roles such as ski follow-cam operators, ski patrol officers, and snowboard maintenance technicians, becoming beneficiaries of the rapidly growing winter sports industry.
Zhu Yuchao, Site Director at Songhua Lake Ski Resort in Jilin, manages a team of over 60 ski patrol officers—a newly recognized profession recently announced by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. Before each slope opens, the team meticulously inspects the terrain, placing markers at sharp turns and deceleration zones while ensuring safety nets are fully deployed along both sides of the runs.
While skiers enjoy the slopes, patrol officers closely monitor crowd movements, promptly urging visitors to move off the center of the run if they pause or rest. In case of accidents, they employ specialized skills in skiing and first aid to safely transport injured individuals down the mountain.
