In France, cycling has reached unprecedented levels of popularity. In just two years, the country’s network of cycling paths has grown by 28%, and bicycle sales have surged by 43%. Both locals and tourists are increasingly choosing this mode of travel. Since 2017, the usage of cycling paths has increased by 52%. The French government is also investing heavily in related infrastructure. As a result, the National Cycling Plan (Plan Vélo national) has received €2 billion in funding, which will be used to expand cycling paths and routes nationwide.
Thanks to the joint efforts of the central government and regional authorities, France has joined the world’s leading destinations for cycling tourism. Yet, France’s ambitions go even further. Our goal is to become the world’s premier cycling tourism destination by 2030. Each year, 22 million French people choose cycling during their vacations, and over 20% of cycling tourists come from abroad. France boasts an extensive network of cycling routes, including 10 EuroVelo paths, attracting both leisure cyclists and long-distance enthusiasts. For fans of the Tour de France, mountain biking, or road cycling, France offers a wealth of options.
Beyond its first-class cycling routes, France also features a range of cyclist-friendly amenities, such as hotels, restaurants, and bike rental companies. The French cycling tourism organization has introduced the "Accueil Vélo" (Bike-Friendly) label to certify such services. Among the 7,100 establishments currently certified, cyclists are guaranteed access to excellent facilities—such as secure bike parking or repair kits—and warm hospitality, making every journey more comfortable.
This thriving trend highlights the growing importance of cycling tourism to France, both economically and environmentally. On average, cycling tourists spend €68 per day—24% more than other types of vacationers—significantly contributing to the tourism industry and local economies.
Whether you’re an experienced cyclist, a long-distance rider, or simply someone who wants to explore the world by bike and enjoy a relaxing getaway, France has everything you need to turn every cycling adventure into cherished memories.
