China reported around 2.3 billion trips during the Spring Festival holiday which ran from February 10 to 17 this year. The country is also expected to see a record high of 9 billion trips during the Spring Festival travel rush which will run until March 5, according to data released from Chinese Ministry of Transport (MOT).

On Saturday, the end of the eight-day holiday, the country saw 308.28 million trips taken, up 52.4 percent compared to the same period last year. Among them, 288.72 million trips were taken by road, and 16.07 million trips by railway.
A record high of 9 billion trips are estimated to take place for tourism, visiting relatives and leisure during the Spring Festival travel rush in 2024, according to the MOT. The country was expected to see a total of 1.8 billion trips by road, railway, air and boat. Self-driving tours will hit a record high with a share of around 80 percent.
The average travel distance per person during the Spring Festival travel rush in 2024 was 509 kilometers according to China Mobile. Around 30 percent of people were traveling for tourism in 2024. Tourism consumption on Meituan Dianping, a Chinese app for services ranging from food delivery to buying tickets to attractions, during the Spring Festival holiday surged 7 times year on year, while the volume of orders on Ctrip, an app for hotel reservation and transportation ticketing, grew 230 percent from the same period of last year.
