According to Allianz Partners USA's top holiday destinations survey, the top three international destinations are all in Mexico: Cancun, San Jose Del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta.
Allianz crafted its list by analyzing nearly 4 million itineraries for roundtrip flights leaving the U.S. from Dec. 18, and returning by Dec. 30. In total, 87% were for domestic trips, and 13% international.
Cancun has been holiday travelers' top international destination in recent years. This year, San Jose Del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta both rose up one spot to Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, while San Juan, Puerto Rico, fell off the top list.
Rounding out the top 10 list this year were, in order, Montego Bay, Jamaica; Oranjestad, Aruba; London; Nassau, Bahamas; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Providenciales, Turks and Caicos; and Paris.
This year marked the first time in the past three years that European destinations made the list. In 2018, Paris was No. 10. Fun-and-sun destinations have largely been more popular over the holidays. Last year, border closures due to the pandemic were also a factor.
Domestically, New York was the top destination, followed by Seattle, Orlando, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Boston, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and Dallas-Fort Worth.
In total, Allianz said, holiday travel will increase 34% compared to last year.
