As an important part of the cultural heritage of Mount Hua, the rock carvings there, with their rich historical and cultural value, complement the mountain's breathtaking natural scenery, forming a unique landscape where humanity and nature are in harmony. They hold significant historical, cultural, and artistic value.

To comprehensively understand and organize the situation of the rock carving cultural heritage in Mount Hua and protect and inherit this unique cultural landscape, the Mount Hua Scenic Area Management Committee, the Xiyue Temple Cultural Relics Management Office, the School of Cultural Heritage at Northwest University, and other units jointly formed a research team. From October 2023 to June this year, they conducted a special investigation and research project on the rock carving cultural heritage of Mount Hua.

"This survey has discovered 137 new rock carvings, with the earliest one being 'You Shixiong's Visit to Huangshentan and His Inscription' from the third year of the Yuanyou era in the Northern Song Dynasty. The carvings feature a rich variety of calligraphy styles, including seal script, clerical script, regular script, running script, and cursive script," a relevant person in charge of the Xiyue Temple Cultural Relics Management Office told reporters on July 25th. After nine months of effort, the research team has documented a total of 739 rock carvings in Mount Hua, compared to the 602 recorded in the third national cultural relics survey.
