Located in Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Bosten Lake is one of the largest inland freshwater lakes in the country, thus it was called "West Sea" in ancient times. Rich in fishes, the lake is now the largest fishery base in Xinjiang and it attracts numerous waterfowls.

There are 600,000 mu (400 million square meters) of reed around the lake, making it one of the four largest reed areas in China.

In 2002, the Bosten Lake area was rated as a national key scenic spot, a natural lake water scenery type natural scenic area, involving Bo Lake, Yanqi, Heshuo, and Korla three counties and one city. In May 2014, Bosten Lake Scenic Area was rated as a national AAAAA tourist attraction, the eighth national AAAAA tourist attraction in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
