Francesco Frangialli, Honorary Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), officially released the Report on World Mountain Tourism Development Tendency (2019) ("Report") at the Online Forum of International Mountain Tourism Day 2020. It is the first comprehensive report on the development trend of world mountain tourism compiled by the International Mountain Tourism Alliance (IMTA), the Sino-French Research Institute of Mountain Tourism, Trip.com Group and TripAdvisor.
The Report collected data of mountain tourism destinations and tourist service platforms worldwide, and calculated the total number of world mountain tourists and the total revenues of world mountain tourism in 2019 through mass case and data analyses. According to statistics, the total number of global mountain tourists staying overnight (domestic and international tourists) in 2019 stood at 1.22 billion and global mountain tourism revenues were 1.36 trillion U.S. dollars. The Report also defined mountain tourism, mountain tourism destinations and mountain tourists; elaborately analyzed mountain tourism development in Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America and Oceania in recent two decades, as well as the current situation of mountain tourism development in these regions; and predicted the future trend of world mountain tourism, especially the mountain tourism market after the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak. In the future, mountain tourism will continue to show its creative vitality, as well as its capabilities of promoting employment, mitigating poverty and enhancing local charm.
With releasing the report was an opportunity, the International Mountain Tourism Alliance will work with more institutions to conduct deeper research on global mountain tourism. In the future, it will achieve more high-level & quality research findings to provide scientific guidance for global mountain tourism development.
